The man started to stumble his way off of Will, but before he could, he was slapped against the chest by Hubrin’s whip-like tongue. He flew several feet away and slid on his face against the ground. The spider skittered sideways as Hubrin lumbered forward. Behind the toad appeared Will’s mother.

“I’ll take care of this,” she said. “Will, you get the others out.”

“What about Credic?”

She turned to look at the hysteria outside. “Don’t worry about him. He made this problem.” Still, she looked sad.

The man in the Voidside was scrambling to find a Binder to feed his spider. He needed out, but Hubrin wasn’t going to allow it. The large toad leapt and landed right in front of the man, his spider shot a bit of webbing that stuck to Hubrin’s leg.

“Go, Will.”

Will made sure the Rizzet was still away from the house’s corner, and then he sprinted inside. There Bet and Ezra sat with Tenebrim and Pexel. All of them looked rather alarmed. Will grabbed a Binder segment and fed it to Swoop. He then pointed forward. In a flash, Swoop opened the pocket. She was getting faster. Will stepped out and watched Bet and Ezra’s expressions melt into relief.

“Come on,” he said. “We can leave now.”

The group got to their feet and then cautiously made their way into the pocket. As they cleared the wall of the house, they found the man who’d attacked Will unconscious on the ground. His spider chittered and spat from its place on his chest.

“What happened?” Will said.

Irene Gladmen raised her hand to hush Will.

“There’s another Darkhand with them, they wouldn’t have only brought the one.”

“Where is it?” Bet said.

“Not sure, it could be anywhere. It could even already be inside. Keep your eyes open.”

She then began to lead the group of them through the open field. As Will watched what was happening, his gut sank. The other Link Masters had captured Credic and they now took turns kicking him as one of the especially large Link Masters held him tight. Will couldn’t see Greggin. Where was he?

Will remembered the promise he’d made. He’d said he wouldn’t go back.

“Mom, they’re hurting him,” he said.

“Yes, I know.”

“Are you just going to let them?”

“Will, I’m not getting into this right now. I came for one reason. That was to get you to safety.”

Will didn’t say another word, but he desperately wanted to do something. The group headed forward until they were nearly beside Credic. The closer they got, the harder it was for Will to do nothing. He tried not to look.

“Stop,” his mother said. “Everyone stop now. There’s a problem.”
