Will gave another glance upward. The Sarat was close. At this point, others in the open field had seen it and had begun to point. It was time to go. Now. It was lucky that Ezra and Bet were close.

The girl stared at Will. She had a confused look on her face, as if she didn’t really know what to make of him. Finally she snorted. Her lizard disappeared and then she also slipped away into nothingness. Will really hoped he wasn’t about to get hit.

But nothing came. Instead, seconds later, Bet and Ezra were at his side.

“Come on, don’t stop. We need to hide,” Ezra said. “We should get back into the hole at the edge. We’re close.”

“Or we could open a pocket,” Will said.

“What?” Bet sounded irritated. “Why? You were just fighting that other Darkhand.”

“I think she’s gone. I don’t know why, but I think she’s going to leave us alone.”

Bet and Ezra looked at one another as if they both were sure Will had somehow gotten a little bit crazier.

“If she’s the only other Darkhand, and she’s decided to leave us alone, we should be safe.” It all made sense in Will’s mind. “Besides, how would Hubrin fit into the hole? I don’t think he could.”

“Hubrin looks like he’s doing fine,” Bet said. The large toad whipped another enemy with his sticky pink tongue. Not far above their heads, the Sarat let out a grating scream. In reaction, Will saw his mother twist her head from side to side looking for him. He held up his hand for her to see.

The Sarat leapt from the wall and thundered into the grass. It’s head whipped back and forth as it decided who to attack first. It began to slink toward Irene and Hubrin, but his mother was quick. She tossed a Binder to Hubrin and then the two of them slipped into a pocket and closed it behind them.

Good, Will thought. She was safe.

Towards the wall, Bet and Ezra scraped against the edge in search of the cave entrance. It was a good thought, and Will found himself backpedaling toward the wall as well. Unfortunately, he couldn’t take his eyes of the madness that occurred in the open field.

Links and Link Masters were running everywhere, and just before Will decided to turn and join Bet and Ezra, he saw Credic being dragged into the bushes on the far side of the field. He hurt for him, but there was nothing to be done. The Sarat was in the way, and even if they got past it, they would still have to face any Link Masters that still guarded him. Will found his place by Ezra and Bet. They had located the small hole and were ready to go inside.

“Let’s go,” Ezra said.

“I don’t know. I’m still not sure that’s best.”

Should they…

Go back into the cave

Go into a pocket
